Essential eCommerce email sequences (part 5 of 10): Checkout abandonment sequence
Lots of sales are made in this sequence. Just sayin'.
After reading this post, you'll know what checkout abandonment is, what you need to build, emails to write, and the triggers + filters to set.
(In Klaviyo, sequences are called "flows." I use these two terms interchangeably.)
Why a checkout abandonment sequence?
The purchase intent is very high at this point, and you don't want to lose momentum. This sequence is triggered when visitors START CHECKOUT but stop. The goal is to entice them to finish the transaction.
What you'll need
Email Template
Use the same template (or similar) for all sequence emails so it's cohesive. Use Dynamic blocks to personalize and show exactly the item(s) in the cart: Dynamic Blocks Guide.
Optional: Coupon
Want to make them an offer they can't refuse? Use a unique coupon that's only good for 24-48 hours. Guide here.
Triggers and Filters
Trigger: Send 2-4 hours after "Checkout Started."
Filter: Did not place an order since starting the flow + Never been in the flow the last 7 days.
Sample sequence emails
Address the source of friction in the checkout process: Is it a surprise shipping fee? Payment options are limited? Coupons not working? Make sure your checkout page is in tiptop shape.
Email 1 (2-4 hours after trigger): "Finish your checkout when you're ready," add an offer if you have one, and remind them of how awesome their lives would be when they use your product.
Email 2 (wait 1 day): Reiterate your offer, if you have payment options (like Affirm or Sezzle) now's the time to remind them of that.
